Work Experiance

Every year Transition Years get the opportunity to go on four weeks work experience- two weeks before Christmas and two weeks after Easter. The Transition Year students have to decide on what profession or career they would like to take when they leave school. Using this information Ms. Dunne, Career Guidance Teacher, and the transition year students find placements for those four weeks, this is where the Transition Years decided to go after Easter:

Jennifer McCann went to Tullamore Hospital and Aiden Bracken Building Design.
Jennifer was doing secretarial work in both places and observing the other workers in designing all the different buildings. Jennifer thought it was ok but she wouldn’t consider taking a secretarial job in the future because she thought it was quite boring.

Eileen Conroy went to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Mountmellick where she feed patients, observed a Physiotherapist at work and worked as a porter. Eileen said she enjoyed some of those duties but found that the person could not get too friendly with the patients because they might not be alive the next time you went into work and therefore found the work quite depressing.

JoeAnn McDonald went to Midland Radio 3 for the first week and then to Tullamore General Hospital for the first week. JoeAnn helped in production in the Radio Studios and then work as a secretary in the Hospital. JoeAnn enjoyed some of the duties she did but she was not sure if she would consider these as or a job when she leaves school.

Katriona McCann went to “Hers n’ Sirs” Hairdressers in Tullamore for the two weeks. Here she was folding towels, cleaning and sweeping up hair every day. Katriona did not enjoy these two weeks and found the work very boring since she was doing the same things over and over again every day.

Michael O’Gorman went to New Line Kitchens in Clonaslee. Here he was sanding doors, observing workers making units and observing units being fitted. Michael said he enjoyed these two weeks simply because he likes working with wood!!

Caryn Russell went to Scanlon’s Solicitors for the two weeks. Here Caryn did secretarial work and had to get forms commissioned. Caryn also went to court for two days and witnessed a court case. Caryn did enjoy these duties. She thought that the trip to the court was the best part. Caryn also said that she would definitely consider taking this job when she leaves school.

Kathy Drumm went to a Vet in Mountmellick for the first week and then went to Energy Gym in Tullamore. Kathy helped the vets when they were on call and did some office work. In the gym Kathy mostly did cleaning and more office work. Kathy found being on call with the vets was very interesting and in the gym Kathy did secretarial work but also got to use some of the machines! Kathy would consider becoming a vet but not working in a gym.

AnneMarie Lynam went to Brett Halliday Chiropractor and then to Ulster Bank. In the Chiropractor AnneMarie did reception work and observed Dr. Halliday practicing chiropractics. In the bank AnneMarie did filing which she hated and found it very boring. She found the reception work just ok but thought that chiropractic was very interesting. AnneMarie would consider becoming a Chiropractor but definitely not working in a bank.

William Dillon went to O.C.S. (Offaly Computer Stores) in Tullamore Bridge Centre. Here he had to stay at the till and sweep the floor. Billy found this very boring and said that absolutely nobody came into the shop at all!! Billy definitely wouldn’t consider taking this as a job when he leaves school because there was not enough work to do!!

Patricia Mahon went to Portlaoise Laboratory and then to Clonaghadoo National School for the second week. In the Lab. Patricia got to help out doing all the tests on the different specimens and samples taken from the patients in the hospital. In Clonaghadoo Patricia was helping the teachers with classes and minding the younger classes while they were on their lunch time. Patricia said that she thoroughly enjoyed her experience in the lab and would definitely consider this as a career when she leaves school. Patricia did enjoy the National School but said that she wouldn’t become a teacher.

Michelle Barrett went to Beverly’s Hair Salon in Tullamore. Here Michelle was sweeping the floor, folding towels, and attending to customers. Michelle thought that it was ok but said it was not her line of work so she wouldn’t consider taking this as a job after school.

Nigel Cassidy went to W.R. Shaw Ltd., Rosenallis where he did basic mechanical work and cleaned engines for two weeks. Nigel said that he like doing this work and said that he would consider this as a job after school but Clonaslee School does not, at present, have Engineering or Metal Work as subjects.

Sandra Walsh went to Renee Spollen, a beauty therapist in Tullamore. Here Sandra observed Renee at work and did secretarial work. Sandra found the secretarial work quite boring but enjoyed watching Renee working with customers.

Alexandra Speedy went to John Hannigan, a vet in Tullamore. Alexandra observed John Hannigan at work and went on call with him. Alexandra enjoyed this work and said that she would consider it as a job after school.
