3. So Scary
So Scared
by Marcia Vaughan
Popping a peppermint into my mouth, I walked across the street. My tennis shoes crunched in the gravel as I hurried along the driveway and up the front steps. To my surprise the front door was open! "Hello. Anybody home?" I called.
Although I couldn’t see what was being unloaded, I could hear feet thumping, trolley wheels squeaking, glass rattling, doors slamming, voices shouting, and the roar of a lion. Must be the radio I thought as I watched the van pull away. Since the new family hadn’t yet arrived, I thought I might just wander over and sneak a peek through the window. No harm in that.
Reaching out with my hands, I groped my way across the straw covered floor, hoping to find a wall. Instead I came to what felt like a wire-mesh screen. Suddenly, out of the darkness beside me came a long low rumbling growl which grew louder and louder!
A first I thought summer vacation was going to be a drag. All my friends had deserted me for summer camp or long trips. I was sitting in the sunshine on the front steps, feeling sorry for myself when a van with the words Minster Manster Movers painted in large red letters came roaring up the street in a cloud of choking exhaust fumes.
I screamed and threw myself full force against the wire screen. But it held. Frantically I felt for a door in the cage. I found a lock and was trying desperately to jiggle it open when I heard the beast padding across the straw straight towards me…
I stepped inside to call again when WHOOSH--the floor beneath my feet gave way, and I tumbled down into total darkness. I landed with a thump in a pile of straw. Mingled with the scents of dust and mildew was an odd sour smell. The room, which had to be the basement, was as dark and bone chilling as a cave.
