Dublin North East constituency stretches from its westermost point in Coolock, to the hill of Howth in the east. The electorate of 58,600 is of mixed social composition. Roughly speaking, social class changes as one moves moves from west to east, going from a predominance of working class in Coolock, to a predominance of higher professional and capitalist in Howth.

From the table it can be seen that the swing from "NO" to"YES" voting in the 1995 referendum, compared to the 1986 referendum, is greater in the areas of greatest working class concentration.
