Lyons, France

Area Profile

Lyons, France

Lyons is the second biggest city in the South of FRANCE. It is the capital of gastronomy: there are many many restaurants. There are many specialities.

There are two rivers in Lyons: the Rhône, the Saone, but some people say that there are 3 rivers : the Rhône, the Saone and the Beaujolais (a famous wine)!

There is the famous show with puppets called "Guignol". They speak with an accent and stage typical characters of Lyons.

It is trying to become an international city: Interpol has its headquarters there.

This desire to become international is reflected in the diversity of languages studied in our school in the Croix-Rousse; a neighbourhood which overlooks Lyons. It is an old neighbourhood which has a rich past. There used to be a lot of silk weavers. Nowaday there are very few left but there is a museum. The Croix Rousse is a little town in a big city. It is set to bee a village. It is quiet but busy as there are many artists, shops... In November, there is a big funfair where you can eat roasted chestnuts. Our « lycée » is well situated near the underground. Some of the pupils came from distant places and travel for 1 hour because the school offers rare options : chinese, drama, arts...

This high school is interesting for young people because there are nice little cafes not very far where students can meet, talk and relax.

School Profile

There are 125O pupils in the « lycée » and 3OO in the « college » . It is a big L-shaped , three-floor building. It is not very beautiful, the walls are all grey, the architecture is simple: concrete blocks compose the whole building. It looks like a factory . There isn’t any grass to sit down at the break .

Although the building is not very beautiful from the outside, there are wall-paintings in the inside . Some of them represent Antoine Saint-Exupéry:

He was born in Lyons in 1900. He became a famous writer very early. He said : "I need to exist." Besides, he was a pilot, very committed to the French during the second World War. Unfortunately he died quite young during a mission in August 1944. He wrote "Le Petit Prince", a very famous book. On top of that he was very much appreciated by the public: since 1993, the fifty-franc bank-note has born his effigy.
