During the series we are introduced to a number of characters, some of which become fairly regular and others who make a once off appearance. The following are characters who have made a number of appearances and therefore deserve a mention when discussing Xena : Warrior Princess.
Calisto is the arch-nemesis of Xena. Calisto comes from a village that Xena destroyed before she
found enlightenment. Calisto is very like Xena in both her athletic abilities and in her prowess as a warrior and a leader of men. She has a hatred of Xena which lives on beyond even death. She killed Gabrielle's husband as a means to turning Gabrielle to the dark side and to taunt Xena about her best friend. In another episode she, with the help of Aires, invades Xena's dreams and takes over her body leaving Xena's spirit trapped in the world of Hades, the underworld. But Hades gives Xena the chance to redeem her body from Calisto but in the final struggle Xena wins but is trapped in Calisto's mortal
body. This is followed in an episode where Xena is Xena in Calisto's body but by aiding Aires to retrieve
his godly powers he returns her to her original form.
Aires is the mentor of Xena. He has crafted her into the great warrior she is and when she
turned away from him in order to pursue a more valuable life he became determined to get
her back. He has taken on many forms in order to try to return her to her evil ways including
that of her estranged father but all to no avail. In one episode he became mortal and had to rely
on Xena's help in order to retrieve his sword which grants him his powers. While in mortal form
he succumbs to fear and pain. He declares that when he becomes immortal again he will change
for the better but this promise is quickly forgotten when he does so.
