Following the great success of "Hercules - the Legendary Journeys" the stage was
set for the introduction of a spin-off series based on a female version of Hercules.
This show was named "Xena - Warrior Princess".
"Xena" is set in the Age of myths & legendsin a far-off world.
The whims of self-satisfying gods and the greed of human tyrants make her world a
dangerous one.
Xena was first introduced in an episode of "Hercules" as a warrior whose
desire for power pits her in a battle with Hercules. She uses her womanly charms to entice
Iolias away from Hercules in a bid to make the two friends fight so she can attack after Hercules has killed his best friend.
But her army attacked a nearby village, killing all except a baby, which Xena saves. The army views this compassion
as a sign of weakness and turn on Xena. She realises that in her quest for power she
had lost her humanity and now realises that she must do battle with evil to help
repent for all the murder & torment she has caused. Xena becomes Hercules' ally and love
interest before heading homeward to begin a new life.
"Xena: Warrior Princess" picks up where "Hercules" left off, with Xena
determined to make amends for the sins of her past On the road home, she defends a small peasant village from a band of soldiers dispatched
by the ruthless warlord Draco. There she meets a young woman named
Gabrielle,
who follows the warrior princess in search of a more exciting life.
Ultimately, Xena and Draco have it out in a battle on top of a scaffolding and
then on top of the villagers heads. Xena is victorious and thus begins her battle
against the forces of evil, with her trusty sidekick, Gabrielle, by her side.
Xena's is one of the most athletic people to be seen on the television
and has a wide range of weapons and other skills. She is well versed in the use of her
chakram, a razor sharp discus-like weapon which she hurls at tremendous speed.
She is also well versed in the pressure points of the body and in a future episode
has a battle to the death with an adversory who is almost as good as she, but not
quite.
In one episode of Hercules we are introduced to the King of Thieves, of Army of
Darkness fame, who purports himself to be the best thief alive. He is a master of
slight of hand and has an amazing ability to escape from any trap. He is introduced
a second time in Xena in order to help her steal back the Ten Commandments from
people who intend on selling them as a weapon to the highest bidder.
The character, played by our own Bruce Campbell, is very similar
(i.e. humerous and totally charming) to his other roles in "The Adventures of Briscoe
County Jnr." and as Ashe of "Army of Darkness".
